Unknown Reactions

Age: 12
Allergen: Still not sure
Symptoms: Swelling, trouble breathing, hives
Where: At home

What’s the Story?
I was mixing coconut and eggs (neither of which I am allergic) when I went into anaphylactic shock. I went to the hospital where I spent the night.

How could this have been prevented?
I don’t know, since I still don’t know what caused it.

Age: 10
Allergen: Unknown cause (possibly nuts)
Symptoms: Slight breathing difficulty, high-pitched voice, pale face
Where: Shopping mall

What’s the Story?
I was at the mall with my mom buying clothes the week before I started grade six. I had a lemonade from a little shop. We checked with the person making it to see if it was safe and he said that it might be cross contaminated with nuts, but he could prepare it separately. About 10 minutes later I felt really weird so I went to my mom and she said I needed my EpiPen®. She gave it to me and it worked right away. I was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

How could this have been prevented
I shouldn’t have ordered the drink since the server told me it may have contained nuts.

Age: 12
Allergen: Unknown
Symptoms: Hives, wheezing, tingly hands, metal taste
Where:  School

What’s the Story?
I was in the schoolyard after lunch when I started feeling funny. Then my friends noticed. I went inside and my teacher was going to give me my EpiPen®. I wasn’t carrying it at the time, so my friend had to go get it for me.

How could this have been prevented?
I should have been carrying my EpiPen® with me.
