What’s the Story?
I had a minor reaction to mustard as a teenager and avoided it ever since, figuring that it must have been a mustard seed allergy. I experienced a few minor reactions afterwards to some other foods but dismissed it, thinking that it could have been cross-contamination. Then one night during a steak dinner I had a pretty serious reaction where my lips felt really funny and my lips started swelling. After comparing the labels of the steak sauce, mustard, and a few of the other things that gave me reactions, I found that the common ingredient was a spice called turmeric.

How could this have been prevented?
I should have been tested by an allergist at first sign of an allergic reaction. It would have been a smart idea to pinpoint what was causing these reactions right away rather than downplaying the minor reactions.
